AREATECHNICAL EDITORIAL RECORD
LibraryGoogle Fonts provides a large open-source font catalog for web, design, and local use. Because the catalog changes over time, this record does not freeze a single family-count figure.
Formats & DeliveryFonts can be served on websites through Google Fonts CSS stylesheets and downloaded for local or self-hosted use. Official font files are also available from the Google Fonts GitHub repository.
DeveloperGoogle provides the CSS API for web-font delivery and a separate REST Developer API that returns JSON metadata for served font families. Developer API requests require an API key.
Variable FontsGoogle Fonts CSS API v2 supports variable fonts and requests across supported variable-font axis ranges.
Web OptimizationCSS workflows support font-display, language/script subsets, multiple-family requests, and text= character subsetting for narrowly scoped text where reducing transferred font data is useful.
LicensingEach font family carries its own open-source license. Much of the collection uses SIL Open Font License 1.1, while some families use other approved open-source font licenses. The specific family license should be checked before redistribution or modification.
Self-hostingFont files can be downloaded and self-hosted subject to the applicable font-family license terms. The official Google Fonts repository provides the distributable font assets and license files.
